We interviewed Carinne Chambers, part of the mother daughter team that developed the menstrual cup concept known as, The DivaCup for our latest installment of “Meet the Maker.”
WHAT IS The DivaCup?
It’s a menstrual cup that gives women an eco-friendly option for their period. It’s made of silicon, is flexible and easy to clean, and is BPA free. You can find it at Whole Foods and other “natural” stores. And of course, it’s also on our website.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
It’s a non-absorbent cup that collects menstrual flow. It is inserted in the vagina and sits at the base of the vaginal canal. It is worn internally, yet because it is soft and smooth, it cannot be felt not will leak when inserted properly.
SOUNDS LIKE A STRANGE IDEA, WHERE ID IT COME FROM?
My mom gave me a cup when I was 14, she had visualized this concept based off an existing product that had become almost obsolete. Menstrual cups have been around for over 80 years, and they were widely utilized in the earlier part of the century, but they had basically disappeared. My mom was looking for a more eco-friendly option than tampons and pads, and came up with The DivaCup. We’ve been working together, ever since!
WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING WITH YOUR MOM?
We’re so lucky, we’re best friends. We have a great partnership that works well. If it wasn’t for each other we couldn’t have gotten this far.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU FACE?
It’s hard to get women to try something new. Breaking the taboos of menstruation, and the “ick” factor. At first, it sounds gross to people. But once they hear about it, they get excited. We do a lot of education through social media and sharing stories of real women using it.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF BEING WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS?
It hasn’t been easy, having people take us seriously is a challenge, sometimes with our own family members. At first, no one wanted to work with us, but we never gave up. If you have a dream, you can make it happen.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE?
Empowering women through more eco-friendly options and continuing to spread the word that The DivaCup is an option.
